Ah, the honeymoon; the much anticipated time of relaxation after so many months of planning. But with so much invested into a wedding in today’s economy, sometimes couples wonder if taking some time away is really necessary or responsible. Look, the honeymoon is a right of passage; it’s something that must be done and will be a time that you do remember for many, many years.

So pull up your boot straps and just conclude that you can and will take some time to celebrate the newness of marriage immediately after the wedding. There are plenty of things you can do together that will give you the time you need and the honeymoon you deserve without breaking the bank. Here we will look at 10 inexpensive honeymoon ideas that may give you some options.

01. Go Camping

If your wedding takes place during months where it is warm enough to enjoy the great outdoors, then get to it! Every city has its own beauty to behold and campgrounds galore. The great thing about a camping honeymoon, aside from the absolute cost effectiveness of it, is that there is nothing to distract you from one another. While sleeping in a tent on the ground may not sound appealing, there are ways to make it super cozy and romantic. Take an air mattress, or one of those thick foam mattresses to sleep on. If a tent is out of the question, there is the option at some campgrounds for cottages.

02. Request a Honeymoon gift

Rather than registering for loads of items that you  may or may not need and use, you can opt to include a note in your wedding invitation that in lieu of individual gifts, friends and family are requested to donate funds towards a nice honeymoon. You could even go so far as to appoint someone to handle the details, or create a Paypal account and provide the details so your guests can easily transfer funds into it.

03. Experience a Home Exchange

While this may seem to be a risky deal to partake in, people have been exchanging homes for vacations since the 1950s. For a small membership fee, you can register with a home exchange service and they will take care of finding you a home you can trade for a specified amount of time. Exchanging homes for your honeymoon can cut your travel costs significantly.

04. Travel during the off season

Planning your honeymoon around off season packages can save you money and also allow you to really experience your destination during a time when it is not overflowing with tourists.

05. Road Trip!

There’s just something about those words that shouts adventure. Pack up the car with whatever you need for a few days on the road, and then just take off. Head to the mountains, or head to the coast; it doesn’t really matter, because the point is to just be free and do as you wish during this time.

06. Make a Deal

Times are tough for the hospitality industry right now, which means many hotels and airlines are ready to deal. With a little time spent researching, and some schmoozing on the phone, you may be very happily surprised at the deals you can find on hotel and airfare.

07. Take the Train

This may not be the most desirable for all new couples, due to somewhat cramped quarters, but taking a train trip can be a cozy and romantic way to spend the first days of married life. Many railways have sleeping cars and special romantic trips to choose from.

08. R&R at the B&B

Look in your local area and you’re sure to find at least a few Bed and Breakfast establishments where you could hunker down for a few days. Staying at a Bed and Breakfast is a great way to cut costs, since oftentimes the hosts will provide breakfast as well as appetizers or other meals.

09. Be a Big Kid

There’s something special about amusement parks that brings out the kid in everyone. A honeymoon spent visiting some local amusement park attractions can be inexpensive and loads of fun!

10. Honeymoon at home

Perhaps the most suitable thing for you is to simply stay home after much has been spent on a lavish wedding. Staying home doesn’t have to be a bad thing. If you know that this is the plan for you, then you can turn your living space into a posh hotel for the week after your nuptials.

Take some time off to go and explore your favorite, most romantic spots around town; and possible some new ones. This time is set aside to just enjoy your spouse. Play board games, read to one another, pack a picnic of cheese and wine to a local park and talk about the future. This time will only be limited by your imagination.
